There are hundreds of websites providing parenting tips for different stages of life. Of course, you cand find useful information in many of them, but in this article we will give the point of view of a father of twins.
We will cover parenting tips for newborns and toddlers, skills needed to be a good parent and how to discipline your kids. Last but not least we will discuss how to be a single parent to finish with some humour, giving a number of funny parenting tips.
Parenting Tips For Newborns
The first days or weeks with a newborn at home are very difficult, sometimes chaotic. If you have twins as it was our case, much worst.
One great parenting tip for the first weeks, is to go to sleep as soon as the babies fall asleep. If you make them sleep at 9 o'clock, you should go to sleep at that time. In that way, when the babies wake up hungry at 12 a.m, you have already slept 3 hours.
The best advice I can give to new parents is to divide the night in two parts. For example, from 9 p.m to 3 a.m. and 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. If the baby or babies cry or wake up in the first period of time, lets say father gets up and takes care of them and if it happens in the second, the other partner does it.
In this way, you are able to sleep 4 or 5 hours without interruptions instead of getting up every hour or two.
Last but not least, asking for help or accepting help is almost essential. The hard work, nerves, pressure, needs that you have a bit of rest. If your parents offer to stay with the babies while you go out some night, accept it. Babies will be ok and you will enjoy very much some air change.
Parenting Tips For Toddlers
First of all, you should follow regular routines. For example, make sure they go to bed at 9 p.m. My mother never forgets one night she was taking care of my kids and the boy asked the time. She told him it was 9 o'clock, he took his pillow and said: "It is time to go to bed."
Another important tip is not to give different messages with your partner. If mother says no and father says yes , or the other way round, results will be bad.
Common advice is to develop a plan on how you want to potty train your child but in my experience each toddler is a different case.
My daughter asked to leave diapers when she was to years old, we started to potty train her and in a few weeks she was fully trained. However, we tried to train my son without any luck. When summer arrived and we were on vacation, we told him that we was not going to use diapers.
I thought we were going to have a difficult summer with lots of "accidents", but that was not the case. Potty training duration was only one day! This shows that even the best plan depends on the toddler.
One of the most important skills is to be able to set limits tolerating the anger of your kid and enforcing consequences consistently.
I remember stopping my wife when she wanted to go to my daughter's room because she was crying, not wanting to sleep there. She cried for 15 minutes, felt asleep and the following days didn't cry anymore. If we hadn't enforce that limit, perhaps she would still be wanting to sleep with us!
Besides enforcing limits, things can get heated-up, the other essential parenting ability to have is understanding to keep great in such warmed scenarios. You'll find many unwanted tasks and scenarios happening , involving the parent having to do two occupations. The first will be to get everybody to college or function on time and the 2nd will be to model for the youngster's non-hysterical and problem solving behaviour which is a bulwark of power when the planet starts to break apart one good day as time goes on.
Parenting Tips Discipline
One of the things I discussed with my wife before the twins were born was the way we were going to discipline them. The most important decision was that spanking was not an option. However, there are certain opportunities when you may think you are loosing your sanity and that the only option would be a spank. In this cases, we implement time-outs, but not for the kids, for us. We try to go to another room for calm recovering, while the other parent tries to tomar control of the situation.
Of course, time-outs for the kids is one the most used ways to discipline them. 15 minutes sitting on a corner after a bad behaviour has always worked. Sending them to their bedroom is not an option, because as a psychologist told us that they would associate their bedroom with a bad thing and could cause other type of problems.
Single Parenting Tips
Any complete article about parenting tips needs at least a section discussing some advice for single parents. Of course, in this case I will not be able to share any personal experiences, but there are some general tips that all parenting websites recommend, and I have seen some friends following that steps.
For example, you can try to find parents in the same situation as you. If you don't have friends or relatives in that situation, you may search for single parents support groups in your area or start your own if there isn't one.
On the other hand, it is recommended to develop a routine, to give the children a sense of security. If the parent works all day, he or she may be tempted to let the kid stay awake more time. That is not recommended because the kid needs certain number of hours to sleep and the parent needs some time alone.
Positive parenting Tips
Trying to stop your kids bad behaviour yelling is not the best solution. However, sometimes it is very difficult to remain calm. In the following video we show some useful positive parenting tips that will allow you to starting changing the way to approach disciplining your kids.
Funny Parenting Tips
A good article about any topic is better if it contains some humour. So we are going to share some funny parenting tips and quotes we have compiled.
In the website pajiba.com, we have found the following tips.
It doesn't matter how much you love your significant other, or how much he or she loves you. It doesn't matter if you've never had an argument in your life. You will argue when you have a baby. You are tired. You are thin-skinned. Everything will set you off. You will assign blame to your significant other for everything, because assigning blame absolves you of it. But rest assured, whatever it was, it was your fault.
Colic is a myth, but it will feel great to blame your child's constant crying on it. It's a convenient excuse, but the reality is: Babies cry. A lot. When they're hungry, when they're gassy, when they're bored, when they want you to hold them, or because it's Tuesday and they fucking feel like it, OK. It's just easier to tell other people it's colic because you don't really fucking know what's wrong with the child.
The best quotes we have found are in modernmom.com:
"You know your life has changed when going to the grocery store by yourself is a vacation"
"You know your children are growing up when they stop asking you where they came from and refuse to tell you where they're going." - P. J. O'Rourke
We have tried to discuss some important and useful parenting tips from the point of view of a father of twins. The experience of having twins has been a wonderful experience and I hope you have found at least one useful tip after reading this article.
